The text is as follows:

PURPOSE OF THIS MEETING 1

  • What are we trying to achieve? „ What has been done so far?
  • „Proposed plan for 2016
  • How much will it cost?
  • How can you get involved?

PURPOSE OF THIS MEETING 2

  • „  To update local communities on progress to date and proposed plans for 2016
  •  To ensure community requirements are considered as part of the project
  • „ To engage early to ensure that local views are incorporated in the procurement
  • „  To understand concerns and ensure these are addressed as we move through the stages of the project
  • „  To ask for volunteers to help support the project

WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO ACHIEVE?

  • „  Create a high speed broadband service for those properties that will not be served by BT Next Generation Broadband roll- out
  • „  Build community owned infrastructure that could be used to enhance mobile phone coverage
  • „  Identify a supplier to support the network, provide help desk services and billing support
  • „  Speed will, initially, be 15 Mbps rising to 30-50Mbps
  • „  The technical solution will be some form of wireless technology using a series of masts to transmit signal and small dishes on each property to receive signal

WHAT ABOUT BT?

  • BT roll-out will provide high speed connections from their core network to local telephone exchanges in 2016
  • Many properties in the community will benefit from speeds of up to 76Mbps
  • But… The exact extent and dates for roll out are not clear yet
  • „ Not everyone will benefit from the new speeds – 50% reduction at <1Km from cabinet
  • Properties on old style broadband connections may find their speeds decrease as priority is given to new super-fast fibre customers

The map from our poster shows the areas BT will cover (the grey circles):

And here is the decline of mbps over distance from the exchange:

PROGRESS TO DATE

  • „  Community Broadband Scotland have indicated support for 89% of capital costs
  • „  Detailed mapping of post codes and existing connections
  • „  Market engagement exercise completed via a Request for Information (RFI) to understand potential solutions, suppliers, costs and business models
  • „  Engagement with BT to understand roll-out plans
  • „  Engagement with other community broadband projects

WHAT WILL IT COST? 1

  • For the network.. „ Capital Costs
    • „ Exact extent of capital funding will be known following the formal tender process but estimates range from £250K – £1M
    • „ CBS will fund 89% – community funding will be 11% (aim is to secure funding from local businesses and grant providers)
  • „ Running Costs
    • „  Running costs will be recouped from sale of broadband packages
    • „  It is hoped that other organisations – mobile phone companies, emergency services – could rent space on the masts or use the network

WHAT WILL IT COST? 2

For residential and business customers

  • „  Target is to ensure that costs are comparable to BT broadband prices – average £30 per month but with premium packages for high users and lower cost options for occasional users
  • „  There will be no need to have a land line
  • „  Contracts will be similar to BT with initial 12 month terms and a connection fee
  • „  A range of packages is envisaged – ideally, we would want unlimited data options and high speed, high quality services for businesses

HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?

  • Success of the project depends on community support
  • Keep in touch – let us know what you think
  • Provide expertise to assist the project team
  • Use of Land/Property to site masts
  • Construction assistance
